The head of the Advanced Textiles Group, Professor Tilak Dias, is just back from the Smart Fabrics conference that was held in Miami, Florida. There were over 100 delegates including those from Adidas, Nike, Samsung, North Face, Apple, Honda, Toyota, Harley-Davidson, Fibretronic, Sefar, Syscom Advanced Materials, Forster Rohner, Kimberley-Clark, Clothing+ and NASA.
Tilak reports that the interest in smart textiles, especially electronic textiles, continues to increase. The fashion industry is particularly focussed on lighting using LEDs and, in general, increased funding is coming from venture capitalist to fund research into “FashionTech”.
It was also noted that a recent feature of the field has been the use of smartphones, to interface with clothing integrated with sensors or active elements, in order to lower the introductory costs for consumers.
